Aloha, Oy!

Rodney Rathbone is out to impress Donna, and no stunt is too crazy - surfing wipeouts, walking on hot luau coals, even parasailing over the ocean. When Donna tries to stop him and apologize for her cruel words, the boat takes off with his harness half-buckled, and Rodney accidentally cuts himself loose... drifting straight toward Pearl Harbor. Meanwhile, the grown-ups' island getaway falls apart when their rental car dies and Captain Quidd's leaky boat runs out of gas, leaving them stranded at sea. And at the USS Arizona Memorial, Lawrence peers through binoculars at a ship across the harbor and spots a man who looks exactly like the father he hasn't seen in two months. With Don's help, he and Jimmy set out for the naval base to find him. It's a Hawaiian vacation where nothing goes as planned - and everything is about to collide.

The story

Don Ioe rescues Rodney after his dangerous surfing attempt leaves him scraped and waterlogged. Rodney expects Donna to admire his courage, but she is impressed only by Don’s rescue. Rather than admit defeat, Rodney begins planning another feat that might win her attention.

That evening, the Banzai Corporation welcomes both families to a luau. Bart announces that he has rejected Don’s official schedule, rented a two-door car, and arranged for the adults to explore the island on their own. The children object: Lawrence and Jimmy want to see Pearl Harbor and the USS *Arizona* Memorial, while Donna wants the beach. Bart explains that the adults will take the car and Don will escort the young people wherever they choose.

Rodney interrupts the meal with a plan to walk barefoot across the hot coals beneath the roasting pig. Even Don warns that such a feat requires years of training, and Bart orders his son to stop. When Bart’s wallet accidentally falls into the pit, however, Bart himself dashes across the coals to retrieve it and needs ice for his feet.

The next morning, Don tells Donna that Rodney wants her to meet him at the speedboat dock. Donna finally understands that the surfing and other stunts began after her harsh words on the airplane. Don admits that his stories about ancient feats encouraged Rodney, though he never expected the boy to take them so far. Donna decides to stop Rodney before he gets seriously hurt.

Meanwhile, Bart, George, Mary, and Doris drive far up the coast toward Makaha in a cheap car from Jack’s Pretty Good Wheels. The car breaks down about forty-five miles from Honolulu. While George and Bart search for transportation, Mary follows Doris through one open-air market after another. Doris assumes a Hawaiian saleswoman cannot speak English and then tries to haggle over a coin purse because Bart has told her it will earn respect. The saleswoman finally offers two purses for five dollars - the same price as buying them separately - and Doris proudly believes she has won a bargain.

No replacement cars are available, so Bart hires Captain Quidd to carry the four adults back to Honolulu in his worn motorboat, the *Minnow*. George questions whether the vessel is safe, but with no obvious alternative, they board. The captain’s rough handling and constant singing soon make nearly everyone seasick.

Don takes Jimmy and Lawrence to Pearl Harbor. At the USS *Arizona* Memorial, the boys learn about the Japanese attack that brought the United States into World War II and the sailors who died aboard the sunken battleship. Lawrence thinks about everything his father has told him and longs to report that he has finally seen the memorial for himself.

At the speedboat dock, Rodney prepares to go parasailing. Donna confronts him, apologizes for the cruel things she said on the plane, and insists he need not risk himself to make her fall for him. Rodney denies that her words hurt and refuses to abandon the stunt. As Donna tries to undo his harness, the boat driver mistakes Rodney’s shouted “no” for the signal “go.” The boat speeds away before all the loosened straps can be secured.

Donna alerts Bill Mason, one of the parasailing company’s owners, and they pursue Rodney in another boat. Rodney’s helmet contains a radio, allowing Donna to warn him not to touch the complicated buckles. He keeps trying to refasten them and accidentally releases his tow line. Instead of floating safely down, an updraft carries him toward Pearl Harbor.

The adults fare no better. Captain Quidd’s engine stops, and his efforts to repair it only disconnect another wire. He finally admits that the real problem is an empty fuel tank. Because the loose wire has disabled the radio, he jumps overboard and begins the long swim to shore for help, taking the pork rinds with him and leaving his passengers stranded.

At Pearl Harbor, Lawrence borrows Don’s binoculars to study the ships across the water. On the upper deck of the USS *Farragut*, he sees a man who looks exactly like his father. A photograph confirms the resemblance. Don learns that Admiral Coraden and his staff have recently visited the ship, fitting Lawrence’s description of Joe’s assignment. Although the admiral’s party has already left the *Farragut*, Lawrence refuses to give up. He has not seen his father in two months and may not get another opportunity for six more. Jimmy and Don agree to help him reach the base and find Joe.
