All-Star Witness

The Jenkinses are suing! After Ashley is passed over for the All-Star softball game, her father Bill hauls Coach Tom into a lawsuit that could cost him his farm and the Timothy Center - and Eugene eagerly signs on as Tom's bargain-rate lawyer, pie charts and all. Ashley is sure Tom turned against her, nitpicking her every play and benching her on the one day the Briarhurst scouts came to watch. But when Whit gets her to sit down with Tom face to face, the truth comes out: he pushed her hard because he believed she could play college ball, and he held her back from the big game to protect her, never dreaming recruiters would be there. One honest conversation could have stopped the whole mess... so Tom stages a pickup game right under a visiting scout's hotel window, Ashley's pitching earns her a tryout, and the lawsuit is dropped. Now if only someone could explain Eugene's bill.

The story

Read the full synopsis 3 min

After Campbell County loses its annual All-Star softball game, Tom arrives at Whit's End with astonishing news: Ashley Jenkins and her father, former mayor Bill Jenkins, are suing him over the way he coached Ashley on the Coyotes. The suit accuses Tom of biased treatment and threatens the Timothy Center and his farm.

Tom cannot afford an attorney, so Eugene offers his knowledge of civil law at a reduced rate. He eagerly begins planning charts, diagrams, and a courtroom strategy, though Tom insists that their first action should be speaking directly with Ashley and Bill.

At home, Ashley tells her father that suing Tom feels too serious and that court frightens her. Bill argues that Tom may have cost her a chance to attend Briarhurst Academy and later receive a college scholarship. He rehearses Ashley's testimony with her so that she will feel prepared.

Ashley remembers that Tom praised her talent and effort at the beginning of the season. Later, he became harder on her than on other players, correcting every mistake and refusing her requests to pitch. Bill connects the change to his long political disagreements with Tom, including a renewed debate over a highway that would cross Tom's land.

When Tom remarks that Ashley is like her father, she hears an insult. Her suspicion appears confirmed when he selects another player for the All-Star game, even though Ashley is widely considered the team's strongest athlete. Briarhurst scouts attend only that local game, so Bill believes Tom's choice has damaged her future.

Whit finds Ashley avoiding Whit's End because she assumes Tom hates her. He reminds her that Tom is still the same coach she admired during the first practices and urges her to speak with him before the conflict goes to court. Ashley reluctantly agrees to a private meeting moderated by Whit.

Tom admits that he did treat Ashley differently, but not because of Bill. Tamika had privately told him that Ashley hoped to play college softball. Recognizing unusual potential, Tom pushed her harder so she could become as good as her goal required. His comparison to Bill referred to Ashley's persistence and refusal to back down, qualities Tom respected even when he disagreed with her father.

Tom also explains why he withheld the All-Star selection. Although Ashley had the necessary talent, he worried that the scouts, older players, and intense attention might be too much for her emotionally. He did not know high-school recruiters would attend. More importantly, he acknowledges that the decision should not have been his alone and apologizes for failing to discuss it with Ashley and Bill.

Ashley admits that she also failed to communicate. She never told Tom how angry and hurt she felt because she had already decided he would not listen. Both recognize that a direct conversation at the beginning could have prevented the entire dispute.

Whit reveals that a Briarhurst scout he knows is still staying at the Odyssey Hotel. Beneath the scout's window, Tom quickly arranges an informal softball game and asks Ashley to pitch. Her skill immediately catches the man's attention, and he invites her to a formal tryout the following month.

Ashley and Bill officially drop the lawsuit, and Tom wishes them well without resentment. Eugene still submits a large bill for his legal preparation, including pie charts and a trip to Chicago to observe another case. As Tom protests the expenses, Whit decides not to interrupt; after all the trouble caused by silence and assumptions, at least everyone is finally communicating.
