A Perfect Testimony

Rose's testimony of a daring cave escape and a miraculously healed leg leaves the kids' class amazed - and Camilla in a panic, because her own turn to share comes next Sunday. Convinced her story is hopelessly boring, she goes hunting for a miracle: praying over her brother Matthew's broken Verminoids game, praying lemonade into strawberry, even commanding a neighbor with a broken leg to stand and walk at a baseball game... with humiliating results. Meanwhile Buddy decides that feeling afraid must be how God works in you, so he skips the movies and sneaks alone into the abandoned coal mine past Trickle Lake. When he doesn't show up, his friends race to the mine and find him trapped in the loose rock, and Rose sets him straight: she never put herself in danger to make God act. Buddy breaks his ankle climbing out, but Camilla splints it with branches and Matthew's belt - a trick she learned helping at the clinic. Come Sunday, Camilla finally has a testimony to tell, and something better: the discovery that God is always at work, even when miracles and mine rescues aren't on your daily schedule.

Rose, a young missionary kid visiting Odyssey, shares an amazing testimony with the kids' class at church. While her family was fleeing through a cave with Pastor Zhang, the pastor fell and broke his leg. Instead of running on, Rose felt God telling her to pray - and Pastor Zhang got up and ran, his leg healed, so that everyone escaped safely. The class is awestruck. Afterward, Connie has the kids study the week's memory verse, Philippians 2:12, about working out your salvation "with fear and trembling." As the kids puzzle over what that means, Buddy gets an idea in his head: maybe feeling fear is how you know God is working in you. Meanwhile, Connie reminds Camilla that she is scheduled to give her own testimony the following Sunday - and Camilla's heart sinks.

Compared to Rose's story, Camilla thinks her testimony is hopelessly boring. She has never parted a sea or seen a miracle, and she worries no one will think God is doing anything in her life. She decides what she needs is a miracle of her own. When her brother Matthew's beloved salvaged Verminoids game suddenly dies, Camilla prays dramatically over it - and when it flickers back to life, she declares it a miracle, though Matthew later discovers it was just a short in the battery pack. At Whit's End she prays for Matthew's regular lemonade to turn into strawberry, only to have Connie walk over and swap the cups, apologizing for her mix-up.

Camilla's biggest opportunity comes at a baseball game, where her mom, Ava, has brought their neighbor Jalen Decker, who recently broke her leg tripping over a baby gate. Sitting in the handicap seats behind home plate, Camilla stands up on her chair and loudly announces, "Mrs. Decker, your leg has been healed. Now stand and walk." Mrs. Decker, of course, cannot walk, and nearby fans begin accusing the poor woman of faking her injury just to get good seats. The outing ends in humiliation, and Camilla lands three Saturdays of yard work at the Deckers' as a consequence.

Meanwhile, Buddy has been chasing fear. Accompanied by imaginary companions - a warrior princess battling orcs and a renegade dinosaur hunter - he tries a dark shortcut through the woods and a nighttime trash run down his long driveway, but nothing feels scary enough to make him depend on God. When he asks his friends about the scariest place in Odyssey, Connie mentions the abandoned coal mine out past Trickle Lake, then immediately warns everyone that it is unstable, flooded, and absolutely off-limits. That evening, instead of meeting his friends at the movies, Buddy copies a map of the mine at the library, grabs a flashlight, and heads inside alone.

Back at home, a tearful Camilla asks her mom why God has never used her. Ava gently explains that a testimony isn't about miracles; it's about how God pursues each person and keeps working in their life because He loves them. God already uses Camilla - when she tells Grandma Lucia Bible stories, keeps peace between her siblings, and encourages people at the clinic. Those things may not seem big, but what matters is that God is active in her life. Comforted, Camilla asks her mom to help her write it all down.

When Buddy doesn't show up at the theater, his friends piece together where he has gone and race to the mine, where they find him trapped among loose rocks near Rock Slide Gully. He shouts that he has always run from fear and needs to face it so his faith can grow, like Rose's did. Rose calls back, "I didn't put myself into dangerous places to test God!" - the dangers in her life were part of what God was already doing, not stunts to make Him act. When Buddy admits he just wants to see God do something with him, Camilla tells him God is working even now: "Just because you don't see it doesn't mean He's not doing anything." Buddy carefully makes his way out, though not before breaking his ankle. Thanks to her time helping at the clinic, Camilla knows how to splint it with branches and Matthew's belt while Matthew calls for help.

On Sunday, Camilla finally gives her testimony, complete with the mine rescue. Buddy, on the mend, admits that working out your salvation with fear and trembling does not mean putting yourself in danger on purpose - a lesson he wishes he had learned before breaking his ankle. Camilla closes by telling everyone that while God does do big, exciting things, He is always at work, even when miracles and mine rescues aren't part of your daily schedule, because God is working everything for His good purpose.
