Zachary Sellars
Zachary Sellars is a boy who moves to Odyssey from Richland with his mother, Eileen. He uses a wheelchair. A crash caused by a drunk driver took both his father's life and the use of his legs. The loss leaves him guarded and quick-tempered, and at first he keeps the truth about his injury hidden behind invented stories. Beneath the defenses he is remarkably bright. He aces tests that stump his classmates and repairs machines that baffle even Eugene Meltsner. He serves as an engineer for the model railway at Whit's End. His closest friend is Lucy Cunningham-Schultz, who also lost her father in a car accident. That shared grief makes her one of the few people he truly lets in.
