John (c)

John is a fisherman's son from Capernaum and one of the followers of Jesus. He grew up on the shore of Galilee alongside his friends James and Simon. As a boy, James could recite scripture better than anyone, and restless Simon kept asking why God let the Romans oppress his people. John was the quiet one. He waited patiently for a Messiah he said he would recognize with his heart. The three friends took up their nets and fished together. Years later, a man named Jesus stood on that same shore and said, "Follow me," and John left everything to do it. Afterward he served in the earliest days of the church in Jerusalem. There, when a man who had never walked was healed, John and Peter were arrested together.
