Don Rodrigo Delaveaga

Don Rodrigo Delaveaga is a Portuguese agent who poses as King Ferdinand's chief Spanish adviser in 1492. His secret purpose is to prevent Christopher Columbus from sailing for Spain. Rodrigo encourages the explorer to demand extraordinary titles, lands, and wealth while the royal court is generous. The advice enrages the king and nearly destroys the proposed voyage. After Lawrence discovers the scheme, Rodrigo kidnaps the queen's young messenger and places him aboard a slave ship bound for the Canary Islands. His treachery is eventually exposed, and he is deported while Spain restores support for Columbus. Rodrigo relies on another man's pride rather than open force, turning apparently friendly counsel into a carefully designed political trap.
