General Liddell

General Liddell is a high-ranking officer in the army of Maris, recognizable by his handlebar mustache and the scar on his cheek. He serves King Lawrence as the ruler's chief military man and the quiet instrument of his darker commands. When Lawrence turns against the celebrated General Darien, it is Liddell who receives the order to get rid of him, and Liddell who leads the pursuit once Darien flees. He is obedient and efficient, but not reckless. He understands the public mood better than his king, warning that open violence against the faithful could turn the nation against the throne, and he prefers to work through hired hands instead. His counsel is often sound, though Lawrence seldom listens to it.
