Edwin Stanton

Edwin Stanton is Secretary of War to President Abraham Lincoln, a figure from American history whom Odyssey's young travelers can meet through Whit's Imagination Station. Jimmy Barclay encounters him in the closing weeks of the Civil War, in the spring of 1865. Stanton is cautious and protective where his president is concerned, fussing over him like an old mother hen. He argues that a trip to the front lines is a foolhardy risk. Lincoln answers that a commander in chief who never looks at the fighting might fairly be called a coward. Even when Washington erupts in celebration at the war's end, Stanton keeps worrying. He urges Lincoln to stay away from public places, insisting the danger is greatest at that very moment. Lincoln laughs off his warnings.
