Harold Whittaker
Harold Whittaker is the father of John Avery Whittaker, the man everyone in Odyssey knows as Whit. He is known through Whit's recollections of his boyhood, which began in Scotland before the family crossed to America. After John's mother died, Harold married Fiona, the warm-hearted stepmother who slowly won the boy over with horseback rides and jokes. Fiona was later blinded in a riding accident, and her peaceful faith in the face of it shaped young John for life. Harold's own place in those years was quieter. He took his son on fishing trips during the same boyhood year that John recorded in his first journal, the year the boy earned the nickname Whit.
