Alvin York
Alvin York is a farmer and crack marksman from the Tennessee mountains, famed as the best shot in the hills and known across the nation as a decorated hero of the First World War. As a young man he drank, gambled, and brawled while his widowed mother prayed for him. After his best friend Everett was killed in a barroom fight, he gave his life to God at Pastor Pyle's church and became an elder there. Drafted despite his conviction that the Bible forbids killing, he prayed on his mountain and concluded that love must protect. In France he picked off German machine gunners alone in the open, and just seven Americans under him marched 132 prisoners to an astonished command post. Promoted to sergeant, he cares nothing for fame. He wants a quiet life of faith and peace with his sweetheart, Gracie Williams.
