News: August, 2004

Well as we all know, today is the day The Odyssey Scoop will shut it's doors to the AIO community. Though thankfully the site will continue to remain on the internet... there just won't be any updates or new information pouring out of the site like we've come to expect in the past.

Now, I often receive questions from people who are under the impression that Odyssey websites are in competition with one another for the latest information, most comprehensive website, or nicest layout. So seeing The Odyssey Scoop shut down is great news... right? Well, actually no. ;o) Contrary to popular belief, I don't really see any of the AIO sites in competition with one another. I would say 95% of visitors visit all the major AIO sites on a regular basis, so unlike other markets in which everyone is trying to outdo each other for a fan base... the AIO community is made up of a smaller, more loyal mold. It's great that there are lots of sites, with something unique separating each site from the next and it's a healthy foundation. For one thing, it keeps my mind coming up with new ideas to attract visitors. Popular features such as AIO Survivor, AIO Mole and the Novacom Q and A would never have seen the light of day if it wasn't for sites such as The Odyssey Scoop or AIOHQ pushing the Soda Fountain to provide something new and different for the fans.

So to answer a question that has apparently been on some people's minds: I too am saddened about the closure of The Odyssey Scoop. I'll miss the Extra Extra's, the AIO Wheel of Fortune, the wonderful graphics and the homemade radio dramas. The Odyssey Scoop has a lot to offer fans that make it a unique and pleasant site to visit. So, and I believe I speak for all fans, I am hopeful for a day in which we can once again come to expect regular updates and fun features from Jacob. In any case, it's been a great 4 years.

The preliminary cover art for "No Way Out" has been revealed and the album is currently scheduled to be released October 2004 (though from what we know of past missed deadlines, it will likely be November). You can click on the image to the right for a larger version. Thanks to Gandalf who pointed it out to me!

As you can see, it's actually an image of Lester running away from Whit in a scene from "No Way In".

It's that monthly event we all look forward... that's right, The Town Hall falling to the ground! ;o) So in the meantime, while The Town Hall tries to repair itself, feel free to use the Soda Fountain Board as a replacement.

Well as we all know, The Odyssey Scoop will be shutting down at the end of the month which got me to thinking. Everyone who has an @odysseyscoop.com web address will lose their accounts on the 31. Here at The Soda Fountain we have the capabilities to offer email services to you (yourname@aiosf.com) and I'll gladly start this service for those who would like me to continue the Scoop tradition.

However, there are some kinks in the system which will prevent this from happening immediately. Apparently my host doesn't allow users to alter their own passwords, which is obviously a big issue. They've said they will offer it in the future, but the future is a broad term. I'll keep you posted on the latest as I believe many of you would benefit from this free service. (If you're really desperate and would like an account, email me and I'll get you set up... the server does keep track of the IP address of those who log into your account, so there is somewhat of a safety net there).

I've switched gears now and have begun to work fulltime on the actor database again. When I speak of the database, I feel like I'm talking of a far off mythical legend that doesn't really exist. But trust me, it does and it will appear here as soon as I can possibly finish it up. I believe once you all see it, you'll understand the reason it's taken me so long to do!

Other projects on the go? Well, the new semester starts up pretty soon so I'm getting things ready for the new year by buying new clothes, books, etc... I've also started a new job that will coincide with my school schedule and not take up too much of my time, especially since it's only temporary. And of course I've always got video games to fall back on :o)

So I apologize for the lack of updates, but do know that if there's something newsworthy you should know, you'll find it here first!

Today marks the conclusion of The Last Chance Detectives radio drama! It's been an exciting 12 week run and I think I speak for everyone when I say it was very enjoyable, so tune into "The Last Flight of the Dragon Lady IV"!

The next month will all be reruns, and then on October 2 is when we can expect the newest AIO episode.

It's been pretty boring these past few days hasn't it? Well, things will likely continue on this course for the next little while. The only Odyssey related news would be that the team is recording a batch of new shows during next week's recording session in Burbank, California.

One thing I'd like to see soon is the cover art for "No Way Out". I'm tired of starring at "In Hot Pursuit" over on the right, just as I'm sure all of you are.

And in honor of Jacob shutting down The Odyssey Scoop, I'm contemplating starting a Q and A section for The Soda Fountain where anyone and everyone can submit AIO related questions and have them answered here. I have a pretty extensive source of resources available and would be happy to enlighten you with any knowledge I can share. So look forward to that sometime in the near future. :o)

It wouldn't be Saturday without a link to the latest episode of The Last Chance Detectives. So go on and check out "The Last Flight of the Dragon Lady III"! I'm still waiting on my backordered copy, but expect to receive it sometime next week.

And, as yesterday was my final day of work, I finished my Radio Theatre journey with Victor Hugo's Les Miserables. Of all the classic radio productions, this is far and wide my favorite of the bunch. With a stellar cast, wonderful sound effects and a great story, it's just a joy to listen to. When I was in high school we did the production of Les Miserables and I played the part of Thenardier. I actually based my version of the unscrupulous inn keeper on the character of Bart Rathbone... it was a perfect fit :o)

Tuesday's post caused quite a bit of speculation over at The Town Hall, so check it out if your curious about the season premiere's guest. :o) Me and my big mouth.

Also, I listened to Little Women from Radio Theatre yesterday at work. It's the first time I've ever heard the classic story and I definitely enjoyed it... though I wasn't a fan of how things ended up for everyone, nor did I think the character of "Amy", as she was performed in the show, was really all that believable. She sounded a lot like Mag Stevens from "No Stupid Questions", which if you haven't heard that show is not a compliment. In this case, Amy sounded like a "character", not a person, and it hurt the production everytime she was on air. But on the whole, it's a touching story and I'm glad I finally got to hear it.

And there's also a new AIO website on the web! The site is called McAllister Park and can be found by visiting the "Links" page of this site. It's just gotten started, so don't be discouraged by the lack of information but instead be hopeful for great things to come!

News is slow, so I thought I'd give some hints about the upcoming season (other small clues about the new season can be found elsewhere on this site, but you likely would never notice it). The season premiere will feature the return of an old character who hasn't been heard on the show in years... the actor of which played a prominent role in The Little Mermaid and The Land Before Time movies.

I'll leave that up to your imagination... but the hint is that it's probably not who you're thinking! I'll try and get some more information about other shows for you, so keep coming back!

August 07, 2004
This week it's time for "Last Flight of the Dragon Lady II" to air on Oneplace. There's just two weeks left in The Last Chance Detectives audio drama which may be the last time we hear from the series. A lot of fans, including myself, hope the series can continue in some capacity... but for now, we're grateful for what we get! It sure beats re-runs!

August 04, 2004
The date for the new AIO season has been pushed back a week. So instead of September 25 as previously reported, the new AIO season will actually begin October 2. This date has been set in stone, so feel free to bet your house on it. :o)

Actually, don't... you never know what strange and unforeseen factors could knock that date back again... but I'm told this is the date that will start the fall season! I'm also thinking of launching the actor database on that date as well... as it gives me a couple of months to finish it up (as I have only worked on it once a week for the past month with work taking up my time). It's definitely worth the wait though, so thank you all for your patience!

August 01, 2004
An article posted at The Odyssey Scoop today indicates that the popular AIO site will cease updating on August 31, 2004. As a webmaster who has been faced with closing his site on several occasions, I can relate... and it's neither a pleasant experience nor something that should be taken lightly.

Citing increased commitment to his college life and limited access to the internet, Jacob believes this is the best course of action to take regarding his site. He does hint, however, that he may find a way to update at some point down the line. For more information on the closure, please visit the Scoop.
