Sperry McGerk

Sperry McGerk was a Civil War era con man who posed as a Union lieutenant while stealing from towns on both sides of the conflict. Hiding in a cave with Odyssey's treasure, he met J.C. Chrisom, a runaway slave who believed the uniform and sacrificed his life to draw soldiers away. The stranger's faith in him shattered McGerk's excuses. Wounded by a cannon shell, he encountered a hospital chaplain, placed his faith in Christ, and quietly returned everything he had stolen. He later settled in Odyssey under the name Reverend Isaiah Newman and became the town's first pastor. Remembered publicly as a heroic scout, Sperry's deeper legacy was not the false legend but the transformed life he concealed beneath it.
