Raymond Rydell

Raymond Rydell is a United States ambassador and the father of Morrie and Suzu Rydell. He has a longstanding friendship with John Avery Whittaker and once asked Whit to watch over his children. That private arrangement helps explain why Whit responds so patiently to Morrie's elaborate tests, staged mysteries, and deceptions in Odyssey. Raymond's diplomatic work keeps him largely outside the children's immediate schemes, but his trust places Whit in a quiet guardian role. As Morrie finally confesses what he and Suzu have done, Whit reveals the connection between their families. Raymond's influence is therefore felt through the adult he chose to help them.
