Phil McFarland

Phil McFarland is a talented basketball player at Camp What-A-Nut and Jimmy Barclay's sports hero. Certain that natural ability is enough, Phil ignores Coach Tom's drills and relies on flashy moves against rival Rusty Gordon. Repeatedly blocked and embarrassed, he hides Rusty's new shoes while Jimmy keeps watch and lies about the theft. Phil's pride begins to change when he finally asks the coach for instruction and practices fundamentals late into the night. A new shot succeeds because he accepts correction instead of showing off. Jimmy's eventual confession gives Phil another lesson about character beyond athletic performance. Competitive and gifted, Phil discovers that improvement requires humility, discipline, and the courage to stop protecting a false image of greatness.
