Oren
Oren was a relative of Elimelech who held the first legal right to redeem Naomi's family land and marry Ruth. His claim stood between Boaz and the woman Boaz loved. At Bethlehem's city gate, Boaz presented the matter before ten elders and first described the land Oren could acquire. Oren eagerly accepted until he learned that redeeming the property also carried responsibility for Ruth and her family line. Unwilling to endanger his own estate, he surrendered the right to Boaz and confirmed the transfer through the custom of an exchanged sandal. Scheming and self-interested, Oren wanted the profitable portion of redemption without its full cost. His refusal cleared the way for Boaz to act with loyalty, protect Ruth and Naomi, and continue the family line leading toward King David.
