Nathan Hale
Captain Nathan Hale was an American patriot and officer during the Revolutionary War. In Irwin Springer's journey into July 1776, Hale becomes the boy's protector while British soldiers search the countryside. He helps Irwin escape danger, pulls him from a lake, and brings him safely before General George Washington. Hale's presence connects a frightened child to the leaders and urgent choices surrounding American independence. Rather than treating history as a distant list of names, Irwin encounters him as a capable soldier moving through real danger. Courageous, alert, and committed to the patriot cause, Hale helps place Irwin on the road to Philadelphia, where a vital letter must reach the Continental Congress.
