Mordecai was the Jewish cousin who raised the orphan Esther before she became queen of Persia. He helped her protect the king from an assassination plot but urged her to keep her heritage private. When Mordecai refused to bow to Haman, the offended prime minister arranged a decree to destroy every Jew in the empire. Mordecai called Esther to use her position, reminding her that she may have become queen for this very crisis. His earlier service was later discovered in the royal records, forcing Haman to honor the man he planned to execute. After Esther exposed the plot, Mordecai became prime minister and helped lead his people from a sentence of death into safety.
