Marty Scoresberg

Marty Scoresberg is the Hollywood director hired to turn Whit's short story "A Day in the Life" into a movie about Odyssey. He arrives with a production that bears little resemblance to the town or its people. Bernard Walton's character disappears, the Imagination Station becomes a magic ring, and Whit is rewritten because the filmmakers consider him boring. Marty treats these changes as ordinary compromises and expects Odyssey's residents to accept glamorous actors in their places. When Connie, Eugene, and the others object, he reminds them that nobody promised the film would truly represent them. Efficient and confident in Hollywood customs, Marty values a marketable production more than the authenticity Whit intended, leaving the real citizens grateful for a life no movie can capture.
