Mark Horton

Mark Horton is Liz Horton's older brother and a soldier in the United States Army. He is close to Liz, who treasures their shared camping and water skiing traditions, but his engagement to Natalie makes his sister fear she is losing her place in his life. Mark is called to active duty overseas and survives an attack on his camp. He later returns from war on crutches after a friend has died saving him. Burdened by the sacrifice, Mark begins giving away his belongings as though generosity could repay an unpayable debt. A visit with his friend's father helps him understand that some gifts must be accepted with gratitude. Brave and deeply loved, Mark learns that his heart has room for family, grief, and a future.
