Lydia was the mother of Ezra, a young beggar in Jerusalem who had been blind since birth. Years of watching her son chase rumors of healers had worn her hope into bitterness, and she called hope the worst possible enemy because disappointment hurt so much. When Ezra heard that Jesus was near, Lydia resisted another attempt and reacted angrily to his determination. Jesus put mud on Ezra's eyes and sent him to wash in the Pool of Siloam. There Ezra saw for the first time and looked upon his mother's smile. The healing changed more than Ezra's sight. Lydia sat at Jesus' feet, discovering that the years of pain had not placed her family beyond God's notice or care.
