Laura-Jean Fremont

Laura-Jean Fremont is a sixth grade graduate who feels ashamed of her parents, Homer and Eula. She plans a celebration at Whit's End without inviting them, embarrassed by her mother's worn work dress and her father's humble behavior toward an angry boss. Whit helps Laura discover what appearances have hidden. Homer quietly forgave a public scolding caused by someone else's mistake, while Eula wears plain clothes as she serves meals so poor visitors will not feel inferior. Together, her parents founded a mission house and helped people leave the streets, praying faithfully for those they serve. Humbled by their generosity, Laura transforms her own party into a celebration of the parents she finally recognizes as worthy of honor.
