Kirk McGinty

Kirk McGinty is a boy whose father died in the Vietnam War before Kirk was born. He grows up imagining battlefield glory and regarding his father as a hero. When history teacher Mr. Altman calls the war a waste and says its soldiers died for nothing, Kirk's confidence collapses. He quits a Memorial Day reenactment, lashes out at his best friend, and questions what his father's sacrifice meant. Kirk's mother answers by reading a final letter from her husband during the dedication of Odyssey's veterans monument. The message helps Kirk understand courage as a willingness to protect freedom despite great cost. Sensitive, proud, and deeply loyal, Kirk learns that honoring sacrifice does not require pretending war is simple or painless.
