King Leary

King Leary was an Irish ruler who encountered Patrick when the former slave returned as a Christian missionary. The king's druid, Lochrue, tried to stop Patrick through an ambush and later prepared poisoned wine at a royal banquet. Patrick recognized the trap and challenged Lochrue to drink from the cup himself. The druid's panic exposed his plot before the court. Leary responded by banishing Lochrue rather than punishing Patrick. He listened to the missionary's message and allowed him to preach throughout the land. The king's change of heart gave Patrick freedom to serve the very people among whom he had once suffered, allowing prayer and courage to influence Ireland more deeply than weapons or political force.
