Joyce McGinty is Kirk McGinty's mother and the widow of a soldier who died in Vietnam before Kirk was born. When his history teacher calls the war a waste, Kirk begins doubting everything he has believed about his father. Joyce helps him understand the conflict by retelling the fall of Saigon and speaking honestly about the cost her family has carried. At Odyssey's Memorial Day picnic, she reads her husband's final letter aloud as the town dedicates a new veterans monument. His words explain why freedom can be worth defending despite its terrible price. Joyce gives Kirk a connection to the father he never met and helps grief become a source of courage rather than bitterness.
