John Dickinson

John Dickinson was a Pennsylvania delegate to the Continental Congress during the debate over American independence. While John Adams argued passionately for separation from Britain, Dickinson warned that the colonies faced a hopeless cause. His caution represented the enormous military and political risk behind the vote. Irwin Springer, visiting the scene in a dream, could not resist shouting that America would win. Twelve colonies ultimately voted for independence and approved the Declaration. Dickinson's opposition reminds Irwin that history's outcome was not obvious to the people living through it.
