Jephthah

Jephthah was an outcast warrior called back by the elders of Gilead when the Ammonites invaded. He agreed to lead their defense only if victory would make him judge over the people who had rejected him. After negotiations failed, Jephthah marched to battle and made a reckless vow to offer whatever first greeted him at home. He defeated the enemy, then returned to find his only child, Adena, running toward him. Grief stricken, Jephthah kept his promise, and Adena was dedicated to God without marrying. Brave in battle but careless with his words, Jephthah won freedom for his people while bringing sorrow into his own house. His story warns that dramatic promises can demand costs never wisely considered.
