James Liddell
James Liddell was a missionary who served in China in the early 1900s. He is remembered chiefly as the father of Eric Liddell, the Scottish runner who later became an Olympic champion. Eric grew up in China as a missionary's son, and as a boy he survived a terrible illness there. James later left Eric behind at a boarding school in far-off Britain while he carried on his work. When war came, a German U-boat sank the ship carrying James back to China, and he was lost. His death left young Eric sad, angry, and scared. Yet Eric trusted God anyway and declared that he would carry on his father's work as a missionary - a calling he later fulfilled.
