Helen Langford
Helen Langford is Esther Langford's mother and teacher at their home-based Langford Elementary. Her approach turns ordinary life into lessons, asking Robyn Jacobs to calculate a year of electricity bills rather than complete abstract arithmetic exercises. When Esther and Robyn trade schools for one day, Helen welcomes Robyn into a schedule that includes practical learning and community experiences. The day takes them to a fire station, where Robyn slides down a pole and helps rescue a neighbor's cat. Helen's instruction gives Robyn the excitement she thought regular classes lacked, while Esther discovers the attractions of a large school. Flexible and attentive, Helen shows that homeschooling is not simply staying inside all day. She builds education around real responsibilities, individual attention, and opportunities to learn beyond a conventional classroom.
