Guy is Madge's loving husband, a poor young man whose greatest possession is an antique gold watch from his father. At Christmas, he sells the watch to buy jeweled combs for Madge's beautiful hair, while she sells her hair to buy him a watch chain. Their useless gifts reveal a shared willingness to sacrifice, and the couple laughs rather than blaming one another. Years later, Guy secretly digs beneath a jewelry shop to find gold and recover the watch. Wealth slowly becomes an idol that pulls him away from Madge, until the treasure proves to be fool's gold and everything else is repossessed. Humbled, Guy recognizes that his faithful wife is worth more than any possession he can reclaim.
