Grandma Betty

Grandma Betty is Aubrey and Bethany Shepard's outspoken grandmother and the wife of Grandpa Frank. When the couple visits, Ben and Ellen worry that their parents will embarrass them at a church potluck. Aubrey has the same fear about her own parents attending a poetry reading, so the grandparents secretly help her reach Whit's End while Ben and Ellen slip away to church. The separate schemes collide when a flyer exposes Aubrey's event and the whole family meets during a limbo contest. Betty's willingness to join the fun makes three generations of embarrassment impossible to hide. Her lively presence helps Aubrey see that her mother understands the same discomfort and that loving relatives need not be treated like secrets.
