Geppetto is a poor, kindhearted toy maker who carves a talking puppet from an unusual piece of wood. He names the boy Pinocchio and treats him as a son, even after the puppet kicks him, causes his arrest, and runs away with his savings. Geppetto sets out in a tiny boat to search the world for the child who abandoned him and is swallowed by a sea monster. Reunited inside the creature, he forgives Pinocchio and escapes with the puppet's help. Geppetto then receives the care he has long offered so freely as Pinocchio works faithfully to support him. His patient love gives the foolish puppet a home worth returning to and a model of selfless fatherhood.
