Admiral George Cockburn

Rear Admiral George Cockburn was a British naval commander during the War of 1812. Alongside Major General Robert Ross, he captured Washington City and ordered major government buildings burned, including the president's mansion and the Capitol. He later held Dr. William Beans, John Skinner, Francis Scott Key, and Lucy aboard the British fleet because they knew Baltimore was the next target. From his ship, Cockburn directed the bombardment of Fort McHenry and ordered heavier fire when an enormous American flag signaled continued resistance. After twenty-four hours, the fort still stood and the British fleet withdrew. Cockburn's attacks gave Lucy a new understanding of national symbols. Watching buildings burn and a battered flag survive taught her that such objects can represent the beliefs and sacrifices of a people.
