Mrs. Galbreath

Mrs. Galbreath is the sponsor of a school science club led by Nelson Swanson. When Nelson raises questions about evolution and intelligent design, she orders him to keep those ideas out of science or surrender the club presidency. Her response turns a classroom disagreement into a test of whether students may examine the assumptions behind accepted theories. Nelson continues with a presentation using colored marbles to illustrate evidence scientists expect but have not found. Mrs. Galbreath again demands that he step down, but the club members vote to keep him as president. She walks out without replying. Her refusal to allow the discussion gives Jill Segler a newspaper story about scientific claims, freedom of inquiry, and courage under pressure.
