Honest Erwin

Honest Erwin owns and operates Honest Erwin's Used Cars, where a thief uses John Avery Whittaker's identity to purchase a vehicle. Whit, Mitch, and Connie trace the hit-and-run car to Erwin's lot while trying to understand how someone has opened accounts and made purchases in Whit's name. The dealership's records provide only limited clues: a blurry driver's-license photograph, a white pickup with a cracked windshield, and a mysterious woman called "Mom" waiting inside. Erwin's business becomes one stop in a much larger investigation rather than the source of the fraud. The apparently ordinary car sale shows how convincing stolen identification can look during a routine transaction. It also gives the investigators their first physical details about the people building the false Whit.
