Emperor Honorius

Honorius was the young Roman emperor whose reign included the final days of gladiatorial combat in the Colosseum. Although Rome had officially embraced Christianity, crowds still cheered while prisoners fought to the death. The monk Telemachus entered the arena and stood between the swords, begging the spectators to end the killing. Instead, the enraged crowd demanded the monk's life. Telemachus's death deeply troubled Honorius and forced him to confront the violence still being celebrated under Christian rule. The emperor responded by ending the gladiatorial games forever. His decision demonstrates how one courageous sacrifice can awaken the conscience of a ruler and lead to a change affecting an entire empire.
