Ed Renfield

Ed Renfield is a member of Pastor Williams's church who strongly opposes a Halloween alternative at Whit's End. After the church asks families to skip Halloween, Brad and Leonard research the holiday and propose a party celebrating good things, with children dressed as Bible characters. Mr. Renfield demands that John Avery Whittaker cancel the event. Whit refuses, explaining that believers should do more than complain about evil when they have an opportunity to create something good. Despite Ed's objections, the celebration fills Whit's End with games, songs, costumes, and families enjoying a new tradition. Ed represents the fearful resistance Whit must answer. His protest raises the central question of whether Christians should merely reject a troubling custom or actively replace it with something wholesome.
