Ebenezer Stooge

Ebenezer Stooge is the richest man in town and a cold moneylender who refuses to celebrate Thanksgiving. He denies help to the poor, warmth to his clerk Bob Wretched, and thanks to God for his own abundance. The ghost of his old partner Jacob Arley warns him that ingratitude has made every blessing another burden. Then the spirit Terrance Clodbody carries Stooge through the night to a mission house and the Wretched home. He sees people with almost nothing giving joyful thanks, including Teeny Tom, who needs an operation his family cannot afford. Humbled, Stooge provides food, raises Bob's pay, funds the operation, and finally prays with gratitude. Generosity gives him the joy his wealth never could.
