Drill Sergeant Combs

Drill Sergeant Combs is the roaring instructor in a Bible Boot Camp program on Kids' Radio. He pushes three recruits to memorize Scripture, but his competitive methods encourage them to throw verses at one another like weapons. The real test comes when Combs tumbles over the edge of a cliff. Although the sergeant has treated Stanley harshly, Stanley lowers a rope and chooses to help his enemy as Jesus commands. That act of mercy wins the contest because it demonstrates more than the ability to recite words. Combs's boot camp makes an important distinction visible: knowing many Bible verses is not enough if a person refuses to live by their meaning when love, humility, and courage are required.
