Doreen Charles

Doreen Charles runs the halfway house where Michelle Terry lives after leaving the Oak Creek detention center. She sees the girl's rough edges and difficulty trusting others, but also recognizes her gift for building detailed model trains. Hoping to encourage her, Doreen mentions that the state fair may display the best child-built car from Whit's End. When a competing engine disappears, that information seems to provide Michelle with a motive. Doreen must report the suspicion because of her responsibility to the halfway house, even while Whit urges everyone not to judge by a past record. Michelle eventually confesses the theft. Doreen's role balances compassion with accountability as she tries to help a wounded girl accept a genuine new beginning.
