Devon is Penny Bassett's former boyfriend and a skilled handyman who avoids difficult conversations. He ended their long relationship through a voicemail and disappeared without explaining himself, leaving Penny afraid that commitment always leads to abandonment. Years later, Devon comes to Odyssey under the false name William Winger and is hired to rebuild Wooton's unusual house. His rocket shower and secret comic room display real craftsmanship, but the borrowed identity hides his purpose. Devon wants to judge whether Wooton is worthy of Penny without confronting her openly. When discovered, he finally explains himself and acknowledges the harm caused by his silence. Cheerful in ordinary work but fearful of conflict, Devon learns that concern does not justify deception or erase the need for honest closure.
