Derek Norman is the father of Leonard "Buddy" Norman. After the Norman family moves to Odyssey, Derek patiently listens as Buddy describes his difficult first week and helps him settle into their new home. He is proud when Buddy finds the courage to speak publicly about his faith. Derek shares his son's love of the Knights of Yore books and teaches him that real love begins with friendship and truly knowing another person. He encourages Buddy to join the Trail Life troop, offering a father-son trip to Canyonlands after they hike one hundred miles. Derek also researches Bigfoot with Buddy because the hobby gives them time together outdoors. When Buddy's attempt to embarrass Jay Smouse goes wrong, Derek gently helps his son recognize the danger of revenge.
