Chief Ngakuku

Chief Ngakuku was a Maori leader of the Ngati Haua tribe and the father of Tarore. His daughter shared the Gospel with him, and he became a Christian after marveling that Jesus chose death rather than calling angels to rescue Him. When raiders killed Tarore and stole her Maori Gospel of Luke, the village demanded revenge. Ngakuku refused, declaring that enough blood had been spilled. He prayed that her killers would receive the same forgiveness she had known. Later, the warrior Uita returned unarmed, confessed, and offered his life. Ngakuku forgave him, returned the Gospel, and prayed beside him. His costly mercy transformed personal grief into a witness that helped bring peace and Christian faith to other warring communities across New Zealand.
