Captain Smith
Captain Smith was an American officer at the Battle of Bunker Hill who directed exhausted colonial soldiers as they faced a much larger British force. After the defenders ran low on ammunition, he ordered a retreat toward Charlestown Neck. Smith found Marvin Washington trying to carry the wounded Caesar Bason and helped protect them, even lifting Caesar onto his own back. When Caesar chose to remain behind so the others could escape, Smith led Marvin away and urged him to remember the soldier's sacrifice for friendship and freedom. He later found injured drummer William Diamond and drew approaching troops away while sending the boys to safety. Decisive and courageous, Captain Smith placed the lives of those under him above his own security.
