Candlewick

Candlewick is the boy who lures Pinocchio away from his first day of school with promises of the Land of Leisure. He describes a place without teachers or lessons, where toys grow on trees and fun never stops. Pinocchio follows him onto a midnight coach, choosing easy pleasure over Geppetto's hopes and his own responsibilities. The paradise quickly reveals its cost when the boys begin growing donkey ears and changing into animals. Candlewick represents the persuasive companion who makes foolishness sound like freedom. He does not force Pinocchio onto the coach; he simply offers exactly what an impatient child wants to hear. His invitation pushes the puppet into one more painful lesson that avoiding discipline can lead to a harsher kind of bondage.
