Billie Schmidt

Billie Schmidt was Danny Schmidt's baby sister, who died before she was born. Danny had eagerly imagined teaching the new baby to climb trees, skip rocks, and play baseball. After another boy warned that babies take attention and possessions, Danny angrily wished the child were not coming. His mother lost the baby that same night, leaving him convinced that his selfish words caused the death. Whit assured Danny that the loss was not his fault and helped him pray honestly. In a dream, Danny met Billie as a lively little girl who could hit his pitch out of the park. She forgave him and promised he would always be her big brother. Billie becomes a loving face for the sister Danny grieves but never knew.
