Amina

Amina is a brave East African girl who meets young Joseph Calhoun and Omer while hiding in the rafters of a looted hut. Her warning saves them from armed men searching for children, and she joins their difficult journey toward a distant refugee camp. Amina carries a precious carved doll as the three face hunger, sickness, wilderness, and pursuit. Joseph throws the doll into a river to mislead the raiders, sacrificing something important to her so they can escape. Although Omer dies near their destination, Amina and Joseph reach the camp. Her courage, resourcefulness, and willingness to travel with two frightened boys help carry their small group toward safety when every familiar protection has disappeared.
