Mr. Altman
Mr. Altman is Kirk McGinty's history teacher and a man deeply wounded by the Vietnam War. He describes the conflict as a waste and says its soldiers died for nothing, never realizing that Kirk's father was killed there before his son was born. Whit later learns that Altman's bitterness comes from losing his own brother in the war. At Odyssey's Memorial Day picnic, the town dedicates a veterans monument that includes both men's names. Seeing his brother honored helps Mr. Altman recognize the pain his classroom words caused. He apologizes, while Kirk also begins understanding that grief can shape harsh opinions. Their reconciliation treats military service with respect without pretending that war leaves simple answers.
