Al Larson is Steve Larson's worried father. He expects his son to attend softball practice and is terrified when Steve disappears on the way there. Al joins the search while Officer Harley investigates conflicting stories involving the carnival, the woods, and an old barn. Steve has actually run away because he believes his father values him mainly as a softball player. The boy's disappearance reveals how much has remained unspoken between them. After rescuers find Steve, Al gives him consequences for running away but also begins the honest conversation his son has wanted. Loving but demanding, Al must learn that enthusiasm for a child's activity can feel like conditional approval when the child's own interests and fears are never heard.
