Connie is escaping to California. She had failed in her attempt in "Stormy Weather" but now she is on her way. Finally Connie can get all that religious stuff out of her head and find her real self. Or so she thinks. This episode masterfully uses flashbacks to recall scenes from past shows concerning Connie's experiences in Odyssey. She just can't seem to get the town out of her head as her friend Marcy observes.

Connie is annoyed by the fact that everyone says how different she is upon her return to the Golden State. They think she might be getting "religious" which is the last thing Connie wants anyone to think. However, she meets a Christian woman on the bus on the way and finds out that her old friend, Pamela, is now a strong Christian. Connie feels as though she is being pursued and blames it on Whit. But Audrey Nelson, the woman on the bus, explains to Connie that Whit isn't behind it, God is.

Connie tries to resist God's urging but for some strange reason, shows up to a bonfire that Pamela had invited her to. She is reunited with Mrs. Nelson who, along with Pamela, is able to witness to Connie further. Connie realizes that she's never going to be at peace in California and decides to return to Odyssey early. Whit is very surprised when Connie shows up to work. He's also very concerned about what changes may have taken place. But to his utter delight, Connie asks to pray with him to accept Jesus.

Although this episode is entitled "Connie," the introduction of Eugene is just as important to this show as Connie's salvation. Since Connie was leaving during the holidays, the busiest time of the year, Whit hired Eugene to help out. We get our first glimpse at Eugene and his arrogance, wordiness, and mechanical ability. It's interesting to hear how much Eugene invented/ modified things in his early days: All of the changes to the shop such as that lovely buzzer above the door, his new and improved vacuum, and solar dishwasher. And we get to hear him meet Connie but the meeting is very tame and they don't start competing until the next show.

A couple of final notes. This is the second show in a row with a title that comes is a character's first name. In this case, though, Connie gets saved and doesn't die. Also, I got the third album long before I got the second album, so when I first heard "Connie" I hadn't ever heard "Stormy Weather" from which a lot of the flashbacks are taken. In fact, I first heard "Stormy Weather" at a friend's house. I was very familiar with "Connie" so I recognized all the scenes where the flashbacks came from. My friend was looking at me strangely as I kept saying, "Oh, I know this part" throughout the entire episode.

I think this is one of the best shows ever produced. The scenes with Connie are excellent, especially with those flashbacks, but the parts with Eugene are also good and are a great addition to this show (even if it is titled "Connie").

Connie(Asking Jesus into her heart): I've been really confused, and i thought that by going to California everything would become clearer for me. And that's exactly what happened. I've got it all figured out and I know what I want to do. I want to pray with you.
